Well, for magazine I'm subscribing for Elle Magazine.
For website, I normally go to, it's a modren oriental style, very fit to my type though. It has a online catalog of products which your husband might be interested

Dwell and Interior Design magazine will cover today's trend, green design, new invensions, art etc
These are more modern magazines.
I also like Metropolitan Home and Elle Magazine. These are toward a more relaxed, somewhat eclectic, trendy magazines.

To do that you need to have your own consulting business in addition to your job. It is not fair to your employers for you to be selecting something like lighting, which they don't sell on their time. You need a business licence, a business name, and a cell phone. Go and talk to contractors personally. I donated my time to decorate some show homes to raise money for our hospital foundation. That is how I made some good contacts, by talking to the contractor in the various phases of construction. Both builders have high end clientele and have recommend my services to them, and both have used my services in the decorating of their own homes. Good luck.

Good Idea, Erika!

My late mother really broke into that market when she did a "Street of Dreams" home. This is where high end contractors build a number of spec homes and dress them to the hilt. They get more "lookers" and therefore, future contracts. Mom got a great deal of exposure, too and formed a relationship with that builder that lasted a lifetime.

Check with any/all building contractor organizations in the area, or large Realtors or perhaps even Building Supply centers. I believe the one she was involved with, was arranged through a large Realtor, who owned a large plot they were subdividing... The Street of Dreams was at the front and the rest of the lots were "for sale".

It depends on whether you want to decorate the interior of your home to reflect the new area that you are in or whether you want it to reflect you and your family. Your own individual style and preferences. Personally, I like to decorate a room according to my own since of style regardless of the environment that I live in. You could even make a dream wall, which could consist of different styles of places you would like to travel to. Or you could center the decor of one room around a specific region or country that you have visited and really loved.
The easiest way to do any room is in basic neutral colors for your bigger pieces then simply add color. By places colorful pieces in strategic places you give yourself the option to change the decor of a room relatively inexpensively. Also by placing certain photographs or pictures on the wall or various pieces of furniture such as a sofa table, end table, coffee table or shelf.

Welcome first of all. One of the best things you can do when you first arrive in a different location is to do some scouting. Look around and embrace the "feel" of the region. Try wood furniture and frames with curvy or ornate design. Fresh flowers and fruit bowls are a staple here in the south and sure to give you that traditional feel. One feature that is often overlooked is light fixtures and cabinet/furniture hardware (handles, knobs). You will discover that it is the little things that will give you the feel that you are looking for. Don't be afraid pick up a book or surf the net for the style you like. Personally, while traditional, I would avoid wall paper or to many antique features. You want a traditional feel, but one that is fresh and not stuffy or old. Your children will also thank you. Because of your color choices, try to use as much natural light to your advantage as possible. Again, your accent pieces will give your home its character so try to tie those in nicely. Aside from a porch swing and a tall glass of iced tea (maybe some gumbo on the side), you should be well on your way to the New Orleans feel.

I can't believe your luck I would kill for an old house in New Orleans. Take pictures!!! of what you have and the rooms you are moving into.

My best advice is to not take on to much at once for decorating. Live with it a bit and cover the windows for privacy. You will get a better sense and feel for what you want as you become accustomed to each other. Work on the main rooms first. LR, DR, Kitchen and Entry hall. Resist the urge to make expensive decorating mistakes just to get it done. Visit other homes and restaurants and bed and breakfasts in the area to get a sense of what is traditional to New Orleans. Frequent the antique and used furniture stores to get more of a feel. Typically a few well chosen pieces integrated with your furnishings will give you the proper feel.

Design is very heavily french influenced for that area and leans toward majestic with vivid use of color and patterns.

The non ultra modern links on this page are a great representation of traditional design.
